Avoid These Mistakes In Your Home
Avoid These Homeowner Mistakes That Could Hurt Your Home

If you’ve ever walked through homes for sale, you’d be amazed at some of the things you see. As a realtor here on Florida’s Space Coast, I walk through a lot of houses—and some of the things homeowners do should honestly be illegal!
From carpet in bathrooms to extension cords used as permanent wiring, these common mistakes can hurt your home’s value, create safety hazards, and make buyers run the other way.
Let’s talk about a few of the biggest home improvement mistakes homeowners should avoid.
1. Carpet in Bathrooms (Just…No)
One of the strangest things I still see in homes is carpet in bathrooms.
Bathrooms are wet spaces. Between showers, humidity, and the occasional splash, carpet becomes a magnet for:
- Mold
- Mildew
- Odors
- Bacteria
It’s nearly impossible to keep clean long-term. Imagine trying to remove spilled shampoo, makeup, or worse from carpet. Not fun.
Better option:
Install waterproof flooring like tile, luxury vinyl plank, or waterproof laminate. These materials are much easier to maintain and far more appealing to buyers.
2. Carpet in Kitchens
Believe it or not, I’ve also seen carpet in kitchens.
Let’s be honest… how are you going to get mayonnaise, cooking oil, or tomato sauce out of carpet? The kitchen is one of the busiest areas in the house. Spills happen constantly, and carpet traps everything.
Better option:
Use flooring that’s designed for high-traffic areas like:
- Tile
- Vinyl plank
- Engineered hardwood
These options are durable and easy to clean.
3. Using Extension Cords as Permanent Wiring
This one is more than just odd—it’s dangerous.
Recently I saw an extension cord running from a utility room, through a block wall, and all the way out to a carport just to power a light, no joke.
Extension cords are meant for temporary use, not as a permanent electrical solution. Using them long-term can lead to:
- Electrical fires
- Overloaded circuits
- Code violations
- Insurance issues
Better option:
Hire a licensed electrician and install a proper outlet.
It’s safer, cleaner, and protects your home.
4. DIY Plumbing Disasters
I completely understand wanting to save money with DIY projects. But plumbing is one area where mistakes can become very expensive very quickly.
Just recently I saw a sink where:
- The pipes were bent incorrectly
- The P-trap was upside down
- The whole setup was leaking
The plumber who inspected it said none of it was even close to code.
Bad plumbing can lead to:
- Water damage
- Mold
- Higher repair costs
- Problems during a home inspection
Bottom line: If you’re not confident with plumbing, it’s best to call a professional.
5. Painting Over Light Switches and Outlets
This one is my biggest pet peeve.
When people paint a room and just paint right over the light switches and outlet covers, it creates a mess.
Later, when the room needs repainting, you’re stuck with two options:
- Paint over the already painted outlet again
- Replace the switch plates completely
And replacing them throughout the house adds up.
The easy solution:
Take the outlet and switch covers off before painting. It takes maybe two minutes and gives the room a clean, professional look.
Why These Mistakes Matter When Selling Your Home
When buyers walk through a house, little things matter.
Small issues like painted outlets or strange flooring choices can make buyers wonder:
- What else wasn’t done correctly?
- Are there hidden problems?
- Will this fail inspection?
Avoiding these mistakes helps your home:
✔ Show better
✔ Pass inspections easier
✔ Maintain higher value
